Beyond the Pill’s Dr. Cynthia Harper recognized by ACEhp for outstanding assessment outcomes

On January 14, 2016, Cynthia Harper, PhD, and her research team from the UCSF Bixby Center’s Beyond the Pill program were recognized at the Alliance for Continuing Education in the Health Professions (ACEhp) 2016 Annual Conference Awards Ceremony.

Each year the Alliance recognizes organizations and members for their contributions to the field of continuing education for professionals in healthcare education.

“I am thrilled that the award recipients are industry leaders,” said Laurie Kendall-Ellis, CAE, ACEhp Executive Director & CEO. “All recipients are dedicated to our community and their interprofessional collaborations have strongly impacted CE and the members we serve.”

Dr. Cynthia Harper received an award from ACEhp for outstanding continuing education outcomes assessment for a cluster randomized trial to reduce pregnancy rates in the US with long-acting reversible contraception. The intervention used in the study was a half-day, CME- accredited training designed to help providers integrate IUDs and implants into routine contraceptive care by improving method-specific knowledge and counseling and placement skills. Dr. Harper and her team tested the training in 40 Planned Parenthood clinics nationwide. The study found that unintended pregnancies among young women visiting the intervention clinics dropped by nearly half over one year.

To date, Beyond the Pill has trained more than 2,000 health care providers serving more than 700,000 female contraceptive clients annually. The training program is a proven way to reduce unintended pregnancies, increase provider knowledge and skills for IUDs and implants, and improve women’s access to these methods of birth control.

Dr. Harper and her team are honored to receive this award from ACEhp and would also like to thank the Office of Continuing Medical Education at UCSF for their support.
