SCAN Pilot Program
The Southwest Contraceptive Access Network
What is SCAN?
The Southwest Contraceptive Access Network (SCAN) grew out of the passion and organizing of Albuquerque-based clinical staff who saw a need to support the hardworking abortion clinics in New Mexico after the July 2022 Supreme Court Dobbs v. Jackson ruling. As a pilot project sponsored by Beyond the Pill, SCAN provides training, technical assistance, and other support to independent abortion clinics in expanding contraceptive access for out-of-state abortion seekers interested in contraception at the time of their visit.
Current SCAN partner clinics are located in New Mexico, Illinois, and Kansas, although all clinics serving out-of-state abortion seekers are eligible.

Vision
We do this by:
- Supporting clinical staff in regional, independent abortion clinics in states with limited contraception access infrastructure
- Focusing on and enhancing clinical conditions that reinforce person- and patient-centered reproductive autonomy (i.e., we’re not here to force birth control on anyone!)

Featured Research
A panel of SCAN program leaders and participants was selected to present at the 2024 National Abortion Federation conference, leading a session entitled Increasing Access for Cross-State Abortion Patients Seeking Contraceptive Care: Lessons Learned from the Southwest Contraceptive Access Network (SCAN) pilot program.
The presentation included data from one of the pilot clinics, highlighting the effectiveness of the intervention at increasing understanding of post-abortion contraceptive provision, as illustrated in Figure 1.
