Beyond the Pill has successfully trained thousands of health care providers in various settings, including community clinics, school health centers, hospitals, abortion health centers, agencies with multiple clinic sites, and peer education groups. Our training program is a proven way to increase provider knowledge and skills and improve patient access to the full range of contraceptives. More than 9,500 providers and 6 million contraceptive clients each year benefit from our training (map).
We offer three types of training: virtual, on-site, and online (self-paced). Our virtual trainings cover best practices for contraceptive care during COVID-19, and help clinics incorporate telemedicine.
Key features & innovations
Several aspects of our training set us apart:
- Our curriculum is scientifically tested in a randomized trial and has been shown to be effective across varied state policy contexts.
- Updated content on provision of contraception during COVID-19, including telemedicine.
- Extensive training experience: more than 9,500 staff trained in diverse clinical and educational settings throughout the US.
- Emphasis on patient-centered counseling and promoting reproductive autonomy. Our training helps clinic sites consider how to improve access to the full range of contraceptive methods without simultaneously engaging in practices that may inadvertently undermine patient autonomy.
- Focused technical assistance to promote awareness of and access to the full range of contraceptive methods through curriculum development, support of educational and outreach activities, strengthening of referral networks, and reduction of logistical barriers to service provision.
- Appropriate for all types of providers, including clinicians, educators, front desk, and billing staff to optimize systems-change at all levels.
- Training costs subsidized or waived for eligible organizations.
- Partnerships with large provider organizations, including Planned Parenthood Federation of America, American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, Cardea, and Bedsider.
- High-quality evaluation of training.
