Clinician Trainer

The Beyond the Pill Program at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) Bixby Center is seeking an experienced, dynamic, diverse, and relatable Clinician Trainer (MD, DO, NP, PA, or CNM) to deliver contraceptive training and technical assistance to health centers and organizations throughout the US and virtually. This Clinician Trainer would help us meet an increasing demand for Beyond the Pill Trainings across the country.

The UCSF Bixby Center’s Beyond the Pill Initiative promotes access and equity in contraceptive health care for women and all people with reproductive potential, and establishes the research foundation to transform clinical care. We are an interdisciplinary team of researchers, clinicians and educators that contribute to science, policy and clinical practice change in the US through research, training and education. We offer evidence-based CME-accredited trainings that improve access and equity for all contraceptive methods to family planning and community health clinics, colleges, health departments, and healthcare organizations across the country. Responsibilities

  • Deliver Beyond the Pill’s program’s scientifically-tested curriculum to clinicians and staff at health, educational and social service organizations throughout the US.
  • Lead and facilitate group discussions on contraception (see topics below)
  • Collaborate with program team to plan, implement and evaluate trainings and assist with training logistics as needed.
  • Customize training curriculum as appropriate.
  • Lead hands-on practicum for IUD insertion and removal skills.
  • Provide technical assistance and supplemental training as needed.
  • Training topics include:
    • Reproductive justice, history and ethics
    • Person-centered counseling
    • Practical and sustainable steps for minimizing bias
    • Medically accurate contraceptive information and non-contraceptive benefits for all FDA-approved methods
    • Utilizing national family planning guidelines
    • Contraceptive eligibility, management and complications
    • Contraceptive best practices
    • Clinic logistics for initiating and streamlining contraceptive care
    • Hands-on IUD practicum

Required Qualifications & Attributes

  • Experienced, dynamic speaker and group facilitator who is able to engage easily, establish and maintain rapport with small and large groups across the spectrum of clinic workers including frontline staff, educators, clinicians, administrative and medical directors.
  • Communicates scientific information clearly and concisely.
  • Advanced knowledge of all FDA-approved contraceptive methods, especially IUD and implant, with in depth knowledge of indications, contraindications, contraceptive and non-contraceptive benefits, side effects, medical eligibility criteria and other national guidelines.
  • Advanced knowledge, expertise, and hands-on skills with placement and removal of IUDs (CuT, LNG IUDs) and implants, pain and complication management. Familiarity with ultrasound localization and/or guidance.
  • Inquisitive about and current on recent contraceptive advances, as well as contraceptive counseling methods such as shared decision making.
  • Able to field an array of questions regarding medical aspects of contraception, clinic processes and flow management, same-visit placements, quality improvement, and contraceptive billing.
  • Comfortable with technology including PowerPoint, Word, Zoom, and AV equipment.
  • Able to work independently with little supervision, as well as supporting a team.
  • Great communication skills, rapid response, high accuracy, and a proactive mindset.
  • Communicates well with team members, as well as academic and national partners
  • Well organized, flexible, collaborative and enjoys the creative challenges of supporting a training program with diverse needs and objectives.
  • Able to co-facilitate and be a pro-active team member with a strong work ethic.
  • Interested in and familiar with training, community-based and academic programs in the areas of contraceptive and reproductive health, family planning, and/or abortion.
  • Prepared to help facilitate continuous quality improvement of training, including evaluation summaries of trainings, follow-up on issues needing further assistance that arise from trainings.
  • Interested in becoming a long-term member of a dynamic growing team.
  • Able to travel throughout the US, including overnight stays and some back to back trainings requiring multiple days of travel.
  • Currently practicing MD, DO, NP, PA, or CNM

Preferred Qualifications

  • We encourage people to apply from under-represented groups in medicine.
  • Knowledge of gynecologic and contraceptive coverage, billing and/or coding.
  • Knowledge of policy aspects of state variation in coverage and restrictions.
